2022
Solo exhibition the road less travelled 29 August – 1 October at The Peisley St Gallery, Orange NSW

A crispy winter in Central West with its pared back palette and grassy wind-swept tawny hills. Long limbed spindly naked trees that offer filtered views of the landscape. Those gorgeous mystic skies and catching a glimpse of a sparkling body of water. The secret back roads tucked in and around Central West always beckon and remain my constant muse.

artist bio

Inel Date is an emerging contemporary artist with a studio based in rural NSW and on the Central Coast NSW.  With a Masters of Arts degree and many years as a Visual Art Educator she is inspired by documenting and responding to place. A move to full time studio practice in 2020 has allowed the expansion and refinement of her practice. Her work is now sold & collected widely. Recently, amongst others, she has been selected as a finalist in the Calleen Art Prize (2019/2020/2022), Lethbridge 20000 small scale art award (2022), Gosford Art Prize (2022) & Kangaroo Art Prize 2022 (Arts in the Valley). Always a geographer her practice is grounded in place. Focused on watching skies and shifting seasons, the play of light and shadow on the landscape and observing the mark of humans (both past and present) within and upon the landscape.

Initially working en plein air to understand and document place. She then moves into studio practice to create works that swing between still abstracted landscapes with pared back seasonal colours or otherwise richly layered exploratory surfaces that focus on mark making, serendipitously creating patterns and making sense of place.  Her 2022 series has involved two solo exhibitions, one in Moree NSW (a song of land, river and sky March 2022) and the other in Orange NSW (the road less travelled September 2022)- both exhibitions being a response to those landscapes, skies and moods. Her current series continues to explore the intersection of geography and place, with a focus on local rural river systems, wetlands and mangrove habitats in NSW that has led to an interest in riparian environments, land and water management. These works will be exhibited in 2023 at a Group show in Sydney and a solo in Balmain in July.
